ANODE
A sacrificial anode is a part of a cathodic protection system and is attached to a steel structure to protect it against corrosion. Cathodic protection works by placing a Anode or Anodes which acts as a External device in an electrolyte to generate a circuit as result current flows from the anode through the electrolyte to the surface of the structure. Corrosion moves to the anode to stop further corrosion of the structure like Tower, ship, oilrig etc. Our professionals ensure specifications that the manufacturing process is carried out under the industry norms. Cathodic protection traditionally used are of 2 Basic types
Galvanic anode protection systems working –
A Galvanic anode protection system works by utilizing sacrificial anodes connected to a protected structure in a circuit. Galvanic anodes use the natural voltage differential or potential, between the anode (more negative) and the structure (less negative) to drive current off the anode and to the structure.
The anode which is normally made from metal such as zinc, is connected to the reinforcing steel and the potential difference between the zinc and the steel causes a small protection current to flow from the zinc to the steel.
Galvanic anode protection consists of applying a protective zinc coating to the steel to prevent rusting. The zinc corrodes in place of the encapsulated steel. These systems have limited life spans. The sacrificial anode protecting the underlying metal will continue to degrade over time. Until the sacrificial anode is no longer capable of supplying protection.
This process is long lasting and successful at presenting structures from corrosion
Typical anode material used are Aluminum, Zinc and Magnesium.
Galvanic systems are generally suited for lower resistivity soils and submerged applications.
2)Impressed current cathodic protection working –
Impressed current anodes use an external power supply (a perpetual source of electrical flow) to drive current off the anode and to the structure.
This sacrificial anodic method of protection uses a metal more active than the base metal to “sacrifice” ions. These “sacrificial anodes” (usual alloys such as magnesium, aluminum, or zinc) have a stronger electrochemical potential. This method can often provide much longer protection. The anode is supplied by an unlimited power source.
This type of system is typically used when galvanic systems are not sufficient to Prevent corrosion. In an impressed current system, there is an active DC power Source (Rectifier that forces current out of a buried or submerged anode), which allows more current to flow to the metal structure. In a way, this provides a continuous protection from corrosion and a most effective corrosion prevention methods and is exceptionally long lasting.
Driving voltage for this system are adjustable, depending on the local soils and the life remaining in the anode. The required current output can vary significantly with the installation. With some installations such as Uncoated seawall pilings requiring hundreds of amps, Impressed systems are best suited for high-resistivity soils and high-current requirement system.
Typical impressed current anodes include mixed metal oxide (MMO), cast iron, steel, graphite or existing scrap metal. These system’s life can last up to 25 to 30 years.

MMO Anodes (Mixed Metal Oxide) for Cathodic Protection
- Reliability, Dimensionally Stable Anodes,
- Exceptionally long life, low wear rates,
- Available in numerous anode configurations,
- Light weight,
- Low cost,
- Most preferred over conventional anodes (Graphite & High Silicon Iron),
The coating preparation consists of an electro catalytic conductive component that catalyzes the reaction to generate current flow and bulk oxides (i.e cheaper fill materials) that prevent corrosion of the substrate material.
Two primary electrocatalysts are used:
Ruthenium Oxide (RuO2)
| Cheaper, For Sea water only, The catalytic life reduces, when Oxygen evolves through reaction. |
Iridium Oxide (IrO2 | Mostly Iridium Oxide based mixed metal oxide for their cathodic protection anodes because it is suitable for both chlorinating and oxygenating environments. The bulk oxides are typically a mixture of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) and Tantalum Oxide (TaO5). It provides an oxide film over the substrate material to prevent corrosion of the substrate. |

Mixed Metal Oxide Anode (MMO Anode):
- This impressed current anode is of light weight.
- MMO coatings have high chemical stability even in environments with very low PH values.
- The coating of mixed metal oxide anodes is not affected by chlorine.
- The wear rate of the MMO anode is extremely low and uniform. It is between 1 and 6 milligrams/ampere per year.
- The anode dimensions remain nearly constant.
- The mixed metal oxide can be operated at high current density, such as 2000A/m2.
- It has superior electrically-conductive performance (10-7Ω·m).
MMO Coated Titanium Anodes :
Tubular Anodes are manufactured using titanium ASTM B338 Grade 1 or Grade 2 substrate, coated with Mixed Metal Oxide. The MMO coating consists of IrO2/Ta2O5 and is suitable for use in all cathodic protection applications.
Mixed metal oxide anodes have an extremely low consumption rate; the titanium substrate remains constant throughout the design life of the anode.
Standard MMO anodes are configured to provide outputs of 5 amps or 2.5 amps over a 20-year period.
Connections are fully encapsulated and resistance tested with PE/Nylon/PE cable.
Other Substrate used are 1) Wire and Rod – ASTM B348,
2) Mesh, Ribbon and Strip – ASTM B265,
Graphite is a perfect anode and is suited to cathodic protection because of its chemical inertness, cost effective and good electrical conductivity.
High quality graphite anode is for the Impressed current cathodic protection systems.
